The first building in Pelican in 1938 was a Finnish steam bath.
Apparently after a hard day of logging the steep fjord mountainside or driving pilings for the new boardwalk, the Finns relaxed inside the wood-fired steam bath. Building Pelican City (as it was known in the 1940’s) out of the wilderness was a tough business! We have constructed our new Highliner Lodge around that original building. Although only a few sticks of lumber remain of the original, we have kept up the tradition and continue to operate the steam bath (and sauna).

Kayak Rentals
"The West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness area is home to world-class kayaking. The area does not receive as many adventure enthusiasts as Glacier Bay or Prince William Sound due to its remoteness, more challenging outside waters kayaking conditions, and lack of publicity. However, there are kayakers that come back year after year for extended trips through the small islands and lagoons that rim Chichagof’s western coast." from 2005 study "Nature based Tourism in Southeast Alaska" Institute of Social and Economic Research University of Alaska Anchorage.

Who, or what, is “Mad Max”?

The MAX is a steel 77’ x 22’ former tour boat that has become my man-cave. Superman has his fortress of solitude, batman has his Bat-Cave... Steve has Max the Man-Cave! The Max is our mobile supply boat and floating repair shop for the Highliner lodge.

Max

“Mad Max” is short for a new business we have started...full business name: Mad Max Mobile Marine Mechanics!

We are proud to announce that we have been approved by Suzuki Marine as a new dealer, and approved repair center, for Suzuki outboards!

We will have new engines, spare parts, oil and accessories for Suzuki outboards. This will be a great help to anyone in the Pelican/Elfin Cove/Gustauvus area who needs in-season parts and service. We will be re-powering all of our boats, as needed, with new Suzuki outboards.

If you are considering what brand of outboard engine to use in this remote area, I think that the brand with a dealership and repair center nearby trumps any other consideration. If you breakdown out here, you may lose the use of your boat for most of the season, waiting for the next ferry to transport your boat to Juneau, then getting “waiting listed” by the repair shop there... and finally waiting again for the ferry! This process can cost you thousands of dollars, even if your are covered by a warranty!

In contrast, with Mad Max you can leave your boat in the water. You can bring your boat to us, or we can bring the Max to you! Either way, you just pull along side of the Max and tie up and we have our shop just a few feet away from your boat and engines. No more wasted time (and money) running back and forth between the job and the shop! No floatplane trip to Juneau. No Ferry. No need for a trailer. IT’S THAT SIMPLE AND FAST. We will keep a good stock of parts and engines on hand. No Alaska Air Goldstreaks. No waiting. We don’t take days off. We are open 7 days a week. No weekend wait.

If you are in the charter business, or have an outboard motor powered boat that you keep in the Pelican/Elfin Cove/Gustauvus area, please do yourself a favor and make you next outboard engine a Suzuki... that decision may save you thousands of dollars and keep you on the water while the fishing is good and there is money to be made!
